Resumen

Muchas veces es necesario examinar los aislamientos en un momento posterior a la infección que generó el cultivo. Por ejemplo, a veces es necesario volver a estudiar un aislamiento con fines epidemiológicos, por ejemplo, cuando se desea saber si un caso nuevo está infectado con la misma cepa de un agente patógeno que había infectado a un individuo en una etapa anterior de la enfermedad. Otro ejemplo podría ser el caso del laboratorio que selecciona anualmente en un momento determinado un número de aislamientos para probar con agentes antimicrobianos adicionales o para estudiar la producción de beta lactamasa; esta práctica podría ayudar a detectar características emergentes en agentes patógenos conocidos. A veces es necesario enviar los aislamientos a laboratorios de referencia para confirmación u otras pruebas, antes de lo cual se deben almacenar, empacar y enviar adecuadamente. La selección del método de almacenamiento depende del tiempo que deben permanecer guardados los microorganismos, el equipo y los recursos disponibles del laboratorio.
